Sky Sports reporter, Paul Gilmour has revealed that Nuno Espirito Santo will be looking to improve the Tottenham defence this summer (Sky Sports News (30/06/21 at 8:20 am).
Tottenham announced Nuno as the club’s new head coach this week, more than seventy days after Daniel Levy and co sacked Jose Mourinho in North London.
The Lilywhites struggled defensively last season under The Special One, with the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez all falling short in the heart of the back four.
At full-back, Serge Aurier was inconsistent, Matt Doherty failed to hit the ground running and Sergio Reguilon seemed to run out of steam towards the end of the season.
Gilmour revealed that Harry Kane’s name will be at the top of Nuno’s to-do list this summer, but he will also be focusing on defenders and working with Fabio Paratici on a squad rebuild.
He said: “One of the things at the training ground, the in-tray, will have that name at the very top, Harry Kane, and what happens with him.
“If he does leave then there could be a complete re-build of the squad. There’s going to be an emphasis on defenders and there will be an emphasis on a bit of a re-build.
“Any re-build will come at a good time with the managing director and a new coach.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
Spurs need two new centre-backs, a new central midfielder, a creative spark and a striker. They also need to sell between five and seven first-team players this summer to raise funds. If the rebuild doesn’t happen now, it will never happen.
