Journalist reveals why Eric Dier is not in the Spurs squad to face Southampton

Tottenham Hotspur kick off 2020 with a trip to the south coast to face relegation threatened Southampton.

Jose Mourinho has named a strong side to take to the field at St Mary’s with Ryan Sessegnon starting at left back while Moussa Sissoko and Lucas Moura come back in to the starting eleven.

Christian Eriksen was also rewarded with his second start in a row following his impressive display in the 2-2 draw against Norwich City which saw him score a stunning free kick at Carrow Road.

One player who has been a regular in the side since Mourinho took charge of the Champions League finalists is Eric Dier.

The England international was nowhere to be seen in Tottenham’s official team announcement to take on the Saints.

Evening Standard journalist Dan Kilpatrick has now confirmed that the 25-year-old misses out after picking up a virus.

Dier had a difficult 2019 with illness and injury and will be hoping for a better year on the field.
