Journalist reveals why Japhet Tanganga missed Spurs friendly against Roma

Japhet Tanganga missed Tottenham’s pre-season friendly against Roma through illness, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

The 23-year-old had been part of the squad that travelled for the game in Israel but was unwell with a sickness not thought to be Covid-related.

He had featured in the rest of Spurs’ matches over the summer but was unable to round out his own preparations as Spurs suffered a 1-0 defeat in their final match of the pre-season campaign.

Tanganga has been strongly linked with a move away from Spurs recently with Serie A side AC Milan showing interest.

The Athletic claim both clubs are in talks about a loan deal, although there is a sticking point with Milan hoping to seal an option to buy at a price lower than Spurs’ €20 million (£16.8m) valuation.

Tanganga endured a difficult recent campaign, missing the second half of the season after going under the knife to repair a knee injury.

He made 19 appearances across all competitions last season with just 11 of those coming in the Premier League (Transfermarkt).

While it won’t have been ideal for Tanganga to have missed that final match, it will keep him injury-free ahead of that proposed move to Milan.

The fact he stayed fit for the majority of the pre-season period is still a positive sign and hopefully his switch to Italy will now start to gain more traction.
