Journalist rubbishes idea that Tottenham have already agreed deal to sell player

Dutch journalist Mike Verweij has rubbished reports that Ajax have agreed a deal with Tottenham Hotspur to sign Steven Bergwijn.

After a stalemate in negotiations between Ajax and Spurs for Bergwijn over the last couple of months (The Daily Mirror), reports over recent days have indicated that the winger is close to completing a return to the Eredivisie.

De Telegraaf stated on Monday that the Eredivisie club were set to make an improved offer for the Spurs man as they are about to receive a cash boost from Sebastian Haller’s impending sale to Borussia Dortmund.

This was backed up by Football Insider, who reported on Wednesday that the Eredivisie giants are set to receive £33m for Haller from Dortmund, and that Ajax were close to a breakthrough in their talks with Tottenham regarding Bergwijn.

The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare subsequently claimed that a fee of £21.5m had been agreed between Spurs and Ajax for the 24-year-old and that the final details were being sorted.

However, Verweij has taken to social media now to insist that no agreement has been struck between the two clubs.

My suspicion is that Spurs will hold out for a fee closer to £25m, particularly since they now know Ajax have the funds to pay such a fee. Given that joining Ajax seems to be Bergwijn’s preference, one would expect the two clubs to reach a breakthrough in negotiations sooner rather than later.
