Journalist rules out transfer as Spurs man does not want to ‘compete with best friend’

Tottenham Hotspur defender, Jan Vertonghen, may have been at the club for eight long seasons now, but he is currently set to depart North London this summer.

Vertonghen has chalked up 311 appearances for the Lilywhites, scoring 12 goals and serving as a huge part of both the unbeaten final season at White Hart Lane and the Champions League Final-reaching side (Wikipedia).

However, the Belgian now has just a few months remaining on his Tottenham contract, with no reports suggesting that a new long-term offer is on the table.

This means that Jan can talk to any non-English clubs about a potential free transfer in the summer window, as he has seen his game time significantly reduced this campaign under Mourinho and Pochettino.

Erik ten Hag admitted that Ajax were closely monitoring Vertonghen’s situation at Tottenham (Ziggo – as relayed by Voetbal).

However, De Telegraaf journalist, Mike Verweij, has now claimed that Vertonghen does not want to rejoin his old side as he has no desire to compete with ‘best friend’ Daley Blind.

During a Q&A, Verweij said (De Telegraaf): “Jan Vertonghen doesn’t want to compete with his best friend Daley Blind at Ajax, and he doesn’t like playing left-back. So, a transfer only seems possible if Blind leaves”.
