French side Lyon have emerged as a contender to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this month. However, while the Tottenham Hotspur player is deemed ‘perfect’ for the Ligue 1 outfit, he could prove to be too expensive.
The days of Hojbjerg being a first-team regular at Spurs are over, it seems. Although the Dane has started the last two fixtures and played the full 90 minutes, that is only due to Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr being away on international duty.
According to Football Insider, the 28-year-old has been told he can find a new club, with Ange Postecoglou believed to regard the midfielder as being surplus to requirements.
It is thought offers of around £20m would be accepted for Hojbjerg this month, as Spurs look to upgrade their midfield options (talkSPORT).
A number of clubs have been linked to the player, with the most recent interest coming from Newcastle United. The Premier League side are believed to be considering making an approach to sign Hojbjerg on loan (Chronicle).

Is Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg heading to France?
However, the latest from Foot Mercato suggests Hojbjerg could be on his way to France, with Lyon reportedly looking to add another midfielder to their ranks.
Lyon are struggling in Ligue 1 and currently languish in 16th place in the table, and are now hoping to introduce more “experienced elements” to the squad, in the form of players who are “capable of shaking up the team.”
The report cites Hojbjerg as a candidate for Lyon, due to his experience, his skillset on the field, and his ability to speak French. However, it is said the deal could be an “ambitious” one from a financial point of view.
Journalist Sebastien Denis tweeted on the matter, describing Hojbjerg as the “perfect” player for Lyon, and it is said the move could benefit the midfielder in his hopes of securing a place in Denmark’s Euro 2024 squad. Still, the “exorbitant cost” would make things “complicated.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I think Hojbjerg will want something better for himself than this move, to be honest. Lyon are struggling, and will not have European football next season, which will definitely be on his mind. I expect him to hold out in the hopes of a more prestigious team to come in for him.
