Journalist says manager is lying about snubbing Tottenham approach

Dutch journalist Henk Spaan has said that Arne Slot has repeatedly lied about having rejected Tottenham Hotspur’s approach, insisting that it was simply a case of Spurs not wanting to meet Feyenoord’s demands for the Dutch coach last summer.

Slot looks all but certain to replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool boss at the end of the season (The Guardian), but is he telling lies about his history with Spurs?

The Dutchman almost made the move to the Premier League last summer after successfully leading Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title in 2022-23 as he was heavily linked with a move to Spurs at the time.

In fact, at one point, it seemed as if the 45-year-old was nailed on to become the next Tottenham head coach, with reports indicating that Feyenoord were resigned to losing their boss to the Premier League side (Football Insider).

However, the move never materialised, with some publications suggesting that it fell through as a result of the Lilywhites refusing to pay the £20m compensation that the Rotterdam club wanted (talkSPORT).

Arne Slot accused of lying about Spurs snub

Spaan has now accused Slot of lying about why his move to Tottenham failed to materialise, with the journalist insisting that the decision was down to the Feyenoord head coach.

When asked about Slot claiming to have rejected Spurs’ offer, Spaan said on the Hard Gras podcast (as relayed by Soccer News): “So he’s said that three times, but Spurs stopped negotiating.

“Dennis te Kloese (Feyenoord CEO) thought it was a worthless offer. Slot is now acting as if he pulled the plug, but that is simply not the case. Tottenham Hotspur just didn’t want to pay more.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Irrespective of why Slot’s move to Tottenham did not work out, the Spurs hierarchy will be quite pleased that the move fell through as they will feel that they now have the right man in charge to take the club to the next level in Ange Postecoglou.
