Journalist says midfielder would improve Spurs but is likely to join Liverpool or Man Utd

The Daily Star journalist Paul Brown has claimed that he expects Manchester United or Liverpool to win the race for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who is also rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar.

The Evening Standard reported this week that Spurs are ready to cash in on Harry Winks this summer, with Antonio Conte intent on replacing the England international with a midfielder in Jorginho’s mould.

Phillips certainly fits that description, with The Telegraph reporting last month that  Conte is a fan of the Leeds star.

However, the report explained that Spurs face competition from Manchester United for Phillips, with the 27-year-old thought to be on Erik Ten Hag’s shopping list ahead of the summer transfer window.

Brown has now claimed that Phillips would be a good fit for Spurs, adding that the England star would be an upgrade over Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

However, he also said that Man Utd and Liverpool have already laid the groundwork to swoop for the midfielder this summer.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “Kalvin Phillips would undoubtedly be an upgrade on Hojbjerg, I think. I just think Phillips is set for either Liverpool or Manchester United.

“I think he’s going to go to one of those two clubs; it seems like they’ve done the groundwork there and that if he leaves Leeds, it’s going to be a straight choice between those two.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Phillips would certainly be an upgrade on Harry Winks and would add more control to our midfield. However, like Ruben Neves, the Leeds star is likely to be the subject of a lot of interest, and I do not see Tottenham getting involved in a bidding war for the 26-year-old.
