Journalist says Mourinho is only at Spurs ‘because of his name’ – Suggests better option

It is fair to say that few people in world football divide opinion as much as Jose Mourinho does. While some consider ‘the special one’ to be past his sell-by date, others still see him as one of the greatest minds football has ever seen.

Even in his short time at Tottenham so far, there are already visible signs of the fan base being split into pro-Jose and anti-Jose camps.

Brazilian journalist Mauro Cezar Pereira seemingly belongs to the latter of those two groups as he believes Mourinho only got the Spurs job off the back of his name.

He insisted that his compatriot, Jorge Jesus, who currently in-charge of Brazilian giants, Flamengo, is a better manager than the Spurs boss.

Pereira suggested that Jesus would do better than Mourinho would if he was in charge of top clubs in Europe and compared the Flamengo manager’s style of play favourably to the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss’.

The ESPN journalist told Spanish publication AS: “If he had a chance in a great team in Europe, Jesus would do a great thing. He is very good.

“I think he is much better than many coaches who train good teams in Portugal. Today, who is better, him or Mourinho? who do we want in our team?

“I have no doubts, I prefer Jorge Jesus. Mourinho had great moments, he became a European brand and there he is.

“Mourinho is in Tottenham by name. Only by name, that’s all.

“He played a game against Manchester United in home on Friday and only defended himself, to try to stay 1-0, and ended up suffering a penalty goal at the end.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The amount of disrespect that Jose has had to endure over the past few years has been quite stunning, considering that he is one of the most successful managers in football history. I am convinced that he will come good at Spurs if he is given time. There are already signs that since the restart that we have improved considerably from a defensive point of view.
