Journalist says six European giants will challenge Spurs for midfielder

Journalist Graeme Bailey has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are expected to face competition from several big hitters from across Europe in their pursuit of Royal Antwerp midfielder Arthur Vermeeren.

It seems inevitable that Vermeeren would make the step up to a bigger club sooner rather than later, with the midfielder not only looking a class apart in the Belgium top flight over the last 18 months but also catching the eye in the Champions League this season.

Over the past month, several outlets have reported that Tottenham have made scouting missions to watch the 18-year-old in action this season and are contemplating a January offer (90 min).

It was even asserted by The Sun a couple of weeks ago that the Lilywhites are at the front of the queue to sign the Belgian international while journalist Dean Jones told GiveMeSport last week that Spurs could land the player for around £20m.

Spurs have heavy competition for Arthur Vermeeren

However, Bailey believes that Ange Postecoglou’s men would have their work cut out to sign Vermeeren, revealing that the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Dortmund, Juventus and Barcelona are all circling over the youngster.

The journalist said on the Talking Transfers Podcast (as relayed by Football Fancast) about the Antwerp starlet: This guy is special. Antwerp have a little superstar on their hands here in Arthur Vermeeren. He really is, from what I’m being told speaking to scouts, they think he’s special.

“Our understanding is that Man City, Arsenal and Tottenham have all enquired about him, so have Bayern Munich, Dortmund and Juventus, Barcelona as well who looked in the summer at him.”

With the Conor Gallagher deal now looking quite difficult for Spurs to pull off, Vermeeren might be the player that the North London club set their sights on.

Perhaps Spurs can convince the Belgian youngster that he would have a better chance of being a key player at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium than he would at the likes of Man City and Bayern.
