Journalist says Spurs are actively trying to avoid signing a Harry Kane replacement

Journalist Dean Jones has played down Tottenham’s chances of landing Serhou Guirassy, explaining that signing an out-and-out centre-forward is not on Ange Postecoglou’s agenda for January.

Over the past month or so, a whole host of outlets have reported that Postecoglou would prefer to sign a versatile forward, who can play across the front three, rather than a traditional number nine (The Telegraph).

Spurs now appear to be on the verge of signing a player of that exact profile, with the versatile Timo Werner thought to be on his way to Hotspur Way.

Various sources have reported over the past couple of days that the Lilywhites have reached a full agreement with RB Leipzig over signing the former Chelsea man on loan, with an option to buy for £13m-£17.2m (David Ornstein).

However, speculation linking Guirassy with a move to N17 refuses to go way, with reports over recent weeks continuing to name Tottenham as a contender for the Stuttgart star’s signature (Gazzetta dello Sport).

In fact, The Sun even claimed a couple of weeks ago that the 27-year-old, who has a £15m release clause in his contract, prefers to move to the North London club over other suitors.

Tottenham don’t want a Harry Kane replacement

Jones has now said that the Guinea international is likely to end up in the Premier League but he revealed that he is not the sort of player Spurs are looking to add to their squad at the moment.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “In terms of Serhou Guirassy, I can see why Tottenham would be interested in him, but he doesn’t really fit the idea of being as versatile as what they would want. It would be more like a Harry Kane replacement, which I’m told is what they’re trying to avoid.

“But of course, this release clause exists that means he can leave Stuttgart and because of the great scoring rate he’s got the Premier League is going to be his most likely destination.

“I think that he’ll look to push his ambition to the limit and he’ll also know that the most amount of money he can earn will be within the Premier League.

“So ultimately, I think it will come down to the best personal package that Guirassy can find that also matches up with his ambitions in a sporting sense.”

With Manor Solomon seemingly not far away from a return, I do not see Tottenham signing another attacker this month following their capture of Werner. With the Dragusin deal also looking likely to go through sooner rather than later, it is clear that Spurs will shift their focus to a midfielder.
