Journalist says Spurs man will not feature for England this month due to injury

The Sun’s Tom Barclay has revealed that Djed Spence is yet to recover from the knee injury that he suffered last month.

There was a lot of excitement about Spence’s arrival in North London 12 months ago following his breakthrough season on loan at Nottingham Forest in the Championship.

However, the 2022-23 campaign was one to forget for the 22-year-old who did not get a single start for Spurs during the first half of the season before being shipped off on loan at Rennes.

While he made a promising start to his spell at France, the right-back once again found himself warming the bench in the final couple of months of the campaign.

Rennes manager Bruno Genesio revealed to Ouest-France at the start of last month that Spence had suffered an injury, which meant that he had to return to Tottenham just before the end of the season.

Barclay has now taken to social media to reveal that the former Middlesbrough man has not yet fully recovered from the injury, which is why he missed out on the Young Lions squad for this summer’s European Under-21 Championship.

Spence was evidently signed by Paratici because of his ability to play as a wing-back and I am quite interested to see if he can adapt to the inverted full-back role under Postecoglou.

While that would seem to take away the 22-year-old’s biggest strength (which is one vs one situations out wide), the new Spurs boss has a history of moulding talented, young players into specific roles.
