Journalist says Tottenham are ‘confident’ of securing first January signing

Transfer expert Dean Jones has revealed that Tottenham are ‘confident’ of securing a transfer for Wolves winger Adama Traore.

Tottenham have been credited with strong interest in the Spaniard, with reports suggesting Antonio Conte’s side will line up a move to bring him to North London this month.

The reports follow up Tottenham’s alleged interest in Traore, 25, from the summer after then-manager Nuno Espirito Santo made him a prime target for the club.

However, it is claimed that Conte now wants Traore for Spurs and intends to transition him into a more defensive role at right wing-back.

Jones believes there is an element of confidence at Spurs in terms of getting the deal over the line soon, however, he does not rule out further competition for the Wolves man, hinting London rivals Chelsea stake a big claim for his signature.

He told The Football Terrace: “Adama Traore is a genuine target [for Tottenham], they’re trying to negotiate terms and a deal with Wolves right now.

“Chelsea are also interested in Adama Traore though, they haven’t gone as far along the road as Spurs have yet, but Chelsea, while their priority is at left-back, they also have issues on the right.

“Adama is a player they’ve admired for a while, but there’ll be some competition there for Tottenham, even though Tottenham are reasonably confident they’ll conclude a deal for Traore.”

Spurs appear to be the front-runners for Traore, but a deal doesn’t seem all that close to being completed. Conte has made him a prime target this month, but Spurs have to be wary about taking too long otherwise other clubs could swoop in.
