Journalist sheds light on Tottenham’s plans for Djed Spence in January

Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas has said that as things stand, Djed Spence does not look set to leave Tottenham on loan in January.

Antonio Conte seems unconvinced by Spence, with the Italian yet to hand the right-back a single start since his switch from Middlesbrough in the summer.

In fact, the Tottenham head coach has reportedly told the club’s hierarchy that signing an elite right wing-back is a priority in January, with Sporting Lisbon’s Pedro Porro thought to be the Lilywhites’ top target (The Athletic).

Some publications have thus suggested over recent weeks that Spurs could decide to loan out Spence (The Times), with a whole host of Premier League and Championship clubs said to have shown interest in signing the 22-year-old (ESPN).

Thomas has now told the Last Word On Spurs YouTube channel that as things stand, Spence is not going anywhere.

However, the journalist added that the England Under-21 international’s situation could change later in the window depending on whether Spurs strengthen that area of the pitch in January.

Tottenham appear certain to sign a new right wing-back in January and Matt Doherty seems to have won Conte’s trust. So, loaning out Spence to a Premier League club and selling Emerson Royal looks to be the likely outcome of this transfer window.
