Journalist suggests Spurs could beat Newcastle to 25-year-old in January

French football expert Jonathan Johnson has claimed that Tottenham would be a more attractive destination than Newcastle for Rennes winger Martin Terrier since Antonio Conte’s men can offer Champions League football.

Terrier has been one of Ligue 1’s most consistent attackers over the last two seasons and the 25-year-old was in fine form during the first part of the 2022-23 campaign, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

The former France Under-21 international was linked with a move to Tottenham in the summer, with Foot Mercato reporting back in May that Spurs are ‘very fond’ of the winger and have already sent a ‘proposal’ to sign him.

Terrier stayed put at Roazhon Park but 90 min suggested earlier this month that he might be on the move in January, with a whole host of Premier League clubs, including the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, and Newcastle United, said to be admirers of the player.

Johnson believes that Spurs have a good chance of winning the race for the Rennes star’s signature if they reignite their interest in the winger in January.

When asked about the Magpies’ pursuit of Terrier, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “I think that there are other clubs who might perhaps be able to put a more interesting proposition to him in terms of immediate involvement in top-level European football.

“So, if Spurs were to come back with some interest, for example, I think the potential of going and playing in the Champions League with them might sway his opinion.”

The speculation linking Terrier with a move to Spurs has died down since the summer. I fully expect the North Londoners to be in the market for a winger in January since Bryan Gil is likely to be loaned out but it does not appear as if the Rennes star is at the top of either Paratici’s or Conte’s wishlist.
