Journalist suggests Spurs could consider 27-year-old centre-back as ‘last resort’

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur might view Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet as the last resort if the club fail to sign a left-sided centre-back by the final few days of the transfer window.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold revealed earlier this month that while Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni is Tottenham’s top target for the left centre-back role, Lenglet and Villareal’s Pau Torres are seen as potential alternatives.

He stated that Spurs tried to sign Lenglet on loan during the January transfer window but the centre-back was not keen on leaving the Camp Nou at the time.

Meanwhile, Esport3 have claimed that Barcelona have offered the Frenchman to Spurs on loan since they are keen to get the centre-back off their wage bill.

Bridge has now revealed the Catalan giants have offered Lenglet to plenty of clubs around Europe, and that Spurs are only likely to view the 27-year-old as a last resort.

He told GiveMeSport: “There’s talk about Bremer, the Torino defender, and then the one Barcelona have offered to every European club, Clement Lenglet. I think that could be a very last resort.

“Even a deadline day one maybe, if Tottenham really have not got anyone, but he’d be the last resort, I’d imagine.”

If Bastoni proves to be out of Tottenham’s reach, I would expect the club to move for Torres. We know that Paratici rates the Villarreal man highly, having tried to sign him last summer. That could perhaps be why Spurs are also not in a hurry to find a buyer for Lo Celso as the Argentine could be used as a makeweight in a deal to land the Spaniard.
