Journalist suggests Spurs could look at one Bastoni alternative in January

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur could make a move for Villarreal’s Pau Torres in January if a deal for Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni proves to be out of reach.

Tottenham’s pursuit of left-sided centre-back during the summer transfer window was well documented, with reports stating at the time that Bastoni and RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol were the North London club’s preferred targets ahead of the likes of Torres (Football.London).

In the end, Antonio Conte’s men snapped up Clement Leglet on a season-long loan from Barcelona and the Frenchman has made a solid start to his Spurs career.

90 min reported last week that Tottenham were one of several clubs monitoring Torres ahead of the January transfer window.

The report asserted that Villarreal would be willing to sell the centre-back for a fee of around £40m and that the player is open to leaving the La Liga club after the departure of Unai Emery.

O’Rourke has now suggested that Spurs might have to make a move for Torres in January as Inter and Leipzig could block the departures of Bastoni and Gvardiol respectively.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “Landing your top targets in January isn’t easy. I think getting Bastoni out of Inter Milan is going to be difficult, especially with Inter in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

“Pau Torres of Villarreal has been linked before. He maybe could be one Tottenham look at again, while signing Gvardiol from RB Leipzig has been talked about in the past.

“But again, they’re also in the knockout stages of the Champions League, and I couldn’t imagine they would be willing to sell them. And for Tottenham, some of those targets have been chased by other clubs as well.”

I do not expect Spurs to be in the market for a left-sided centre-back in January as both Lenglet and Davies have performed well in the first part of the campaign.  It is an area that Tottenham might want to address next summer and I suspect Bastoni will remain at the top of Conte’s wishlist.
