Journalist suggests Tottenham should consider PL manager for vacant job

Guillem Balague has admitted he is surprised Tottenham Hotspur are not considering Julen Lopetegui for the vacant managerial role at the club, amid reports the Spaniard may be set to leave Wolves.

Lopetegui joined Wolves earlier this season, replacing Bruno Lage in November 2022 with the Midlands club languishing in the relegation zone.

The 56-year-old was able to drastically improve fortunes at Wolves and steered the club clear of a relegation battle. They now sit in 13th place in the Premier League table as we approach the final game of the season.

Despite his impressive work, there is a chance Lopetegui could be leaving Wolves in the summer due to the financial situation at the club (BBC Sport).

The manager is reportedly set to miss out on signings he was promised when he took over and may walk away as a result.

With Tottenham once again looking for a new permanent manager, Balague has taken to Twitter to reveal his surprise that the North London side are not looking at Lopetegui.

He said: “Considering that Lopetegui should be a candidate for manager of the year and if his time at Wolves reaches an end, I find it surprising that Spurs have not put him in the managerial shortlist.”

Balague goes on to recognise the “very impressive” work Lopetegui has done since joining Wolves.

The manager has improved the points-per-game ratio for Wolves from 0.67 before his arrival, to 1.41 at this moment in time.

He has also massively improved the defensive elements of a Wolves side who were previously conceding 1.6 goals per game. The club has now kept seven clean sheets since Lopetegui took over.

Lopetegui has done fine work since taking over at Wolves and has seemingly got the best out of a squad that he actually changed very little in January.

If he were to leave Wolves, he would surely at least be worth a discussion for Spurs.
