Journalist talks about chances of ‘happy’ Conte signing new Spurs contract

The Sun’s Tom Barclay has suggested that Antonio Conte’s contract running out at the end of the season may not be of concern for Tottenham since the Italian has seemed happy at the club.

Multiple reports from Italy over recent weeks (Paolo Bargiggia and Calciomercato) have claimed that Conte would be interested in taking over at Juventus job at the end of the season, which is why he is stalling on extending his contract with Spurs.

However, Football.London’s Alasdair Gold revealed last Thursday that Spurs have the option to extend the 53-year-old’s deal by another year whenever they wish.

He also added that those close to the Tottenham boss believe he would happy to have talks with the club regarding a new deal.

Fabrizio Romano subsequently said on his YouTube Channel that Juve have not made any contact with the Spurs head coach.

Barclay has now stated that Conte’s demeanour and words over recent months have suggested that he would be happy to stick around at the North London club as long as he is backed in the transfer market.

When asked about the Italian’s future, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “Conte, his contract is up in the summer, but there’s an option to extend it.

“There’s always, I guess, a possibility that he could sign a contract. He has seemed generally, throughout this pre-season and the early part of the season, very happy and has talked about potentially being here for many years.

“But it’s also Conte. Sometimes, you’re not quite sure what he’s thinking. He, historically, hasn’t stayed at clubs for too long and it’s all about, generally, teams matching his ambition.

“If you actually look at his history, yes, he was sacked at Chelsea, but at Inter, he left of his own accord. That’s often what can happen.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Looking at it objectively, I do not think Conte would get a better job than the Spurs one at the moment as most clubs outside the Premier League, including Juventus, do not have the financial means to allow him to build the team that he wants.

The 53-year-old also has a group of players at Tottenham who are willing to run through brick walls for him, and he knows that winning any trophy at the North London club would cement his legacy as one of the best in the world.
