Journalist thinks 29-year-old defender will be central to Spurs’ future plans

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has reported that tying Eric Dier down to a new contract is a ‘no-brainer’ for Tottenham as the centre-back is a key part of Antonio Conte’s plans.

Dier was one of Spurs’ most improved players last season but the England international has not been able to maintain the same consistency so far this season, being guilty of several unforced errors which have led to goals.

Despite this, the 29-year-old has remained a fixture in the heart of Conte’s back three and 90min reported on February 22 that the North London club wish to tie down the defender to a new contract.

Football Insider then reported a couple of days later that Tottenham had already begun negotiations with Dier’s entourage regarding a two-year extension to his current deal, which runs out in 2024.

The report added that the former Sporting Lisbon man is ‘very happy’ at Hotspur Way and that the early stages of negotiations have been positive between all parties.

When asked about the developments regarding Dier’s future, O’Rourke has now told GiveMeSport: “I think Dier has established himself as a key man in this Tottenham team right now.

“I think he’s going to be central to plans going forward for Antonio Conte and Tottenham.

“Tying him down to a new contract is a no-brainer really, I think, for everybody involved.

“Dier is happy at Tottenham and Tottenham are happy with him.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Despite what some Spurs fans think about Dier, it is a no-brainer to tie him down to a new contract, if for nothing else than preserving his market value.

It would certainly not be in Tottenham’s interest to allow the centre-back to run down his contract.
