Journalist thinks defender will say yes to Spurs move if they come knocking

Journalist Ryan Taylor is of the belief that Tottenham Hotspur will win the race for Djed Spence if they really want the Middlesbrough starlet.

Spence had an exceptional campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest in 2021/22 and helped the club secure promotion to the Premier League.

The 21-year-old is reported to be Tottenham’s number one target for the right wing-back role, with the North London club expected to step up their pursuit of the youngster (The Telegraph).

Forest are said to be keen on snapping up Spence on a permanent deal, with the club thought to be hopeful that the promise of regular Premier League football at the City Ground next season would persuade the right-back to sign for them (Sky Sports transfer centre, 30/5, 10:55 am).

According to Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, Spurs also face competition from the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Roma, Newcastle, and Brentford for the England Under-21 international.

Taylor believes that Antonio Conte’s men will win the race for Spence if they show serious interest in the player but he questioned if the Boro man is of the quality that the Lilywhites need.

The journalist told GiveMeSport about Spence: “I think if Spurs come in for him, then he’ll go there, but I do question whether they might look at other options.

“I’m not sure who that might be, but Spence, a good player, is he going to be a clear upgrade on Royal or Doherty? I’m not quite sure.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Spence has proven to be excellent in one vs one situations, both defensively and offensively. While the step up from the Championship to the Premier League is a huge one, the 21-year-old does seem to have the attributes to fit naturally into the right wing-back role in Conte’s system.
