Journalist thinks Spurs are more likely to sign 21-year-old than Raphinha

Journalist Dean Jones has said that while Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Raphinha, they are more likely to make a move for Nico Williams this summer than the Barcelona star.

Raphinha has not set the world alight at Barca this season, having fallen down Xavi Hernandez’s pecking order and it has been widely reported over the past couple of months that he could be sold by the La Liga club this summer, given their need to offset loses.

Relovo carried this information and were one of several outlets to suggest that Tottenham are keeping a close eye on the former Leeds man’s situation while Sport revealed just last week that the Lilywhites might face competition from Saudi Arabia for the Brazilian.

Tottenham could make a move for Nico Williams

The 26-year-old is not the only La Liga winger that Spurs are thought to be eyeing, with various outlets suggesting over the last couple of weeks that Ange Postecoglou’s men could also battle the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea for Nico Williams (The Mirror).

The Athletic Bilbao starlet has really come of age this season, with six goals and 13 assists to his name across all competitions so far, and Jones believes the 21-year-old would be a more tempting option for Tottenham than Raphinha.

He told GiveMeSport: “I’m not very expectant over Raphinha, even though Tottenham are interested in him. They have a few like him on their list but I get the feeling he is on it more in hope than expectation. This is a serious talent.

“I know he has not set the world alight at Barcelona but he has been desperate to make that move work out and he’s still in the starting XI for Brazil so this is a player who retains high value in the market and Barca would deal with that accordingly if interested parties make contact.

“I have a feeling that if Spurs sign a player from La Liga it might be more likely they try for Nico Williams. He’s on the list too and actually might be a better fit at a better price.”

Williams would be a better fit for Tottenham’s project, given his age as Postecolgou might be confident of helping the youngster fulfil his potential. However, Raphinha is a more readymade player and has Premier League experience and would thus be more likely to make an instant impact.
