Journalist thinks Spurs will look to sign ‘top-class’ player in one position in January

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge has claimed that signing another central defender will be a priority for Tottenham Hotspur in January.

Tottenham’s defensive record was quite poor under Nuno Espirito Santo, with the North Londoners letting in three goals each against the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.

However, the defence has been transformed since Antonio Conte arrived at the start of November, with Spurs having conceded just three goals in their six Premier League matches under the Italian, registering four clean sheets.

The Lilywhites have managed this despite losing Cristian Romero to a long-term injury, with Davinson Sanchez filling in impressively for the Argentine at right-centre-back.

Tottenham have been linked with several central defenders since Conte’s arrival, including the likes of Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger, Inter Milan’s Stefan de Vrij and Torino’s Gleison Bremer.

Bridge believes that despite Tottenham’s improved defensive performances, Conte will want to strengthen his central defensive ranks next month.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “I certainly think Spurs will look to add another top-class centre half, with Romero, that would be great. If they had that then they’re looking good at the back.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am not sure if a centre-back will be Conte’s number one priority as a number nine (who can serve as Kane’s backup) is arguably much more urgent.

However, I do believe Spurs will be in the market for another central defender in January, particularly if Joe Rodon is loaned out.
