Journalist Mikos Gouka has suggested that Feyenoord should offer to double Arne Slot’s salary to keep him out of Tottenham’s hands this summer.
Slot has completely transformed the Feyenoord side since taking over as head coach in the summer of 2021, with the club now on course to winning their first league title since 1999.
Multiple outlets have reported over the last few weeks that the Dutch coach is on Tottenham’s shortlist to replace Antonio Conte (The Times).
The latest such report came from The Daily Star, who claimed over the weekend that the Lilywhites have narrowed down their shortlist to four names – Slot, Julian Nageslmann, Vincent Kompany and Thomas Frank.
The publication added that the 44-year-old Slot is ‘a strong contender’ for the Spurs hot seat.
When asked about the speculation last week, the Feyenoord boss refused to commit his future to the Eredivisie club beyond the end of the current season (1908.nl).
Gouka believes that the Dutch club should offer Slot a huge pay rise in an effort to get him to commit for two more years.
He said on the AD Voetbal Podcast (as relayed by FR12): “It’s like if Feyenoord double his salary, or maybe more, they’ll be without money right away.
“I’m not at the table at Feyenoord and I’m not with the management, but why not do this once?
“If you are so satisfied with a manager, you say ‘We want you to stay at Feyenoord for another two years’.
“There’s this salary in return, you’ll be Feyenoord’s best-paid manager ever, but then we don’t want any whining when Spurs turn up on your doorstep either, because for the next two years, you’re ours.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I do not think Tottenham would seriously consider giving the job to Slot as it would be too big a risk, given his lack of experience in a top league.
However, I do think that one of the mid-table Premier League clubs like West Ham, Palace, Forest or Leeds could be tempted to hire the 44-year-old this summer.
