Journalist warns bidding club that Levy could raise price of Spurs player if they delay

Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen has claimed Tottenham are not going to sell Steven Bergwijn to Ajax for a cut-price fee and suggested the North London club’s asking price is only going to go up if the Eredivisie giants continue dawdling.

Bergwijn has already publicly expressed his intention to leave the North London club this summer in search of regular game time (AD).

It was reported two weeks ago that Ajax were set to return with a second offer of around £20m including add-ons for the former PSV Eindhoven man after seeing their first offer of around £15m turned down by Antonio Conte’s men (The Daily Mirror).

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the winger is attracting interest from several sides this summer and that Spurs are demanding €30m (£25.6m) for him.

Driessen has now claimed that Tottenham would not sell Bergwijn for €25m (£21.4m) since the 24-year-old’s value could potentially go up even further if he performs well at the World Cup.

The journalist said on De Telegraaf’s podcast Kick-Off (as relayed by Voetbal Primeur): “As long as you keep dawdling, that transfer price will go up, of course.

“They are now saying €25m. But that’s not coming from Spurs, that amount. Why would Spurs sell him when they know they have a gold mine in their hands?

“He will probably also go to the World Cup, he will play at the World Cup, he is developing very well with the Dutch team.

“If he can continue that at Spurs, he might even become a basic player. So that’s a guy I don’t think you’ll get for under €30m.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think there is any chance of Bergwijn remaining at Spurs, particularly given that Conte is keen to add to his forward line. However, at this point, it does not seem like Ajax are going to win the race for him.

While moving to the Johan Cruyff Arena might be the 24-year-old’s preference, Tottenham would want to get a bidding war going and maximise his value.
