Journalist wonders whether two Spurs players will ask to leave in January

Tottenham Hotspur youngsters Japhet Tanganga and Bryan Gil could look to leave the club in the January transfer window, according to journalist Alasdair Gold.

The pair have found themselves on the peripheries of Antonio Conte’s squad, and were both rumoured to be very close to leaving Spurs in the summer.

Tanganga, a product of the Spurs academy, has made 44 appearances for the first team in his career (Transfermarket). He has played just 17 minutes this season though, with a brief substitute appearance in the Champions League game against Marseille (Transfermarkt).

Gil joined Tottenham last summer from Sevilla, but spent the second half of the season on loan at Valencia. The 21-year-old was in line to rejoin Valencia this summer (Mundo Deportivo via Sport Witness) but Spurs pulled the plug on that move at the last minute.

With Spurs unable to find a replacement, they were reluctant to let Gil leave (Domingo Ortiz).

Tanganga on the other hand, was consistently linked with a move to Italy, with AC Milan tracking the defender all summer. By the sounds of it, neither club could agree on a purchase fee to be included in a loan deal, so the whole thing collapsed (Alasdair Gold).

With Gil yet to feature for Spurs this season, and Tanganga making just one substitute appearance, Alasdair Gold now believes they will both look to leave the club in January. On his YouTube channel, Gold suggested new signings will need to come in first though.

He said: “As for January, I think they have to [make additions].

“Bryan Gil isn’t going to sit there for the whole season on the bench, just doodling on a piece of paper or whatever it is they get him to do on there!

“He’s going to want to go in January and get football, if he’s not playing, and the moment he goes ‘okay that’s fine’, I want him replaced.

“I wonder if Japhet will be similar. Tanganga will probably want football in January as well, so just by the nature of it, the January window has to have transfers in it.”

It’s clear that both players are only here to provide cover in the event of an injury crisis. While both talented lads, it’s not fair to keep them hanging around and rotting on the bench, and it would be far better for the club to cash in and sign some top players who can actually compete for a first-team place.
