Journalist would be ‘surprised’ if Spurs defender is not in starting XI against Man City

Alasdair Gold has suggested that he expects Eric Dier to start Tottenham Hotspur’s first game of the season against Manchester City on 15 August, as he explained on the Gold and Guest podcast.

The defender has been linked with a move away this summer with The Sun reporting on July 3 that the club could be willing to sell the 27-year-old to raise funds for other signings.

However, with just a couple of weeks to go until the start of the Premier League campaign, Dier remains a Tottenham Hotspur player, with a stern test against the reigning champions on the horizon.

Six-year servant Toby Alderweirld has already left the club and joined Qatar side Al Duhail SC this summer (BBC).

Despite a lot of movement in that position, Gold still claims that Dier will likely start against Pep Guardiola’s side on the opening day of the new season.

He said: “This is where I’m really going to upset people. I’d be surprised if Dier isn’t starting that first game against Man City.

“I just kind of feel where we’re at now, with Romero coming in very close to the Man City game – hopefully before.

“I’d be surprised if we see a very different centre-back pairing against Manchester City.

“Alderweireld is not there, so you have one change definitely, but I’d be very surprised if Eric Dier isn’t playing in that game.”

Romero’s ability alone warrants him starting even though it is very soon. But who partners him is the question. This feels like Dier’s last chance, especially with a promising defender in Rodon just behind them.
