Journalist would not be surprised if Serie A club bid for Spurs player this summer

Italian journalist Paolo Del Genia has talked up the chances of Napoli signing Tanguy Ndombele on a permanent deal from Tottenham this summer.

Ndombele’s performances have been steadily improving over the course of the season, with the Frenchman being an effective impact substitute off the bench for the Serie A table toppers over recent months.

The 26-year-old came off the bench to score his first league goal for Napoli last week in their 4-0 win over Torino.

Over the last few days, reports from Italy have suggested that Luciano Spalletti’s men might be coming around to the idea of signing the player permanently in the summer.

Area Napoli reported on Tuesday that the Italian club had already started working on a deal to extend Ndombele’s stay at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

The publication explained that while the €28m (£24.7m) option to buy is considered too high by Napoli, they could look to agree on a 12-month extension to the midfielders loan deal, with the option of buying him for around €20m (£17.7m) in 2024.

Del Genia has now backed Napoli to negotiate a discounted price for the Tottenham man in the summer.

The journalist told Radio Goal (as relayed by Tutto Napoli): “Ndombele? He seems to me to be growing, and not because he scored.

“You could always see his potential but he couldn’t make his plays come true, but now he seems to me more involved in the action and becomes decisive.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if Napoli tried to redeem him for a different figure than the €30m agreed with Tottenham.”

I fully expect the two clubs to agree on a deal for Ndombele’s transfer in the summer as Spurs will be keen to get the midfielder off their wage bill.

The only potential roadblock to the transfer might come from the player’s side if the 26-year-old feels that he would rather join a club where he is guaranteed to be a starter.
