‘Just don’t get it’ – Pundit bemused by criticism aimed at Tottenham player

Chris Sutton has admitted he is at a loss to explain the kind of criticism that Harry Kane gets despite his stellar record for both club and country.

Kane had a lacklustre start to the season following his failed move to Manchester City last summer, which led some to question whether the striker was past his best (talkSPORT).

However, the 28-year-old has proven since the arrival of Antonio Conte at Spurs that he remains one of the best centre-forwards in world football.

The striker found the back of the net for the 49th time for his country on Thursday, converting a penalty to help England to a 2-1 win over Switzerland.

The goal means that Kane is now only four goals shy of Wayne Rooney’s all-time record tally of 53, with the Spurs man reaching his tally in far fewer games (Goal.com).

However, some fans on social media questioned Kane’s achievement and insisted the striker’s tally was inflated by the number of penalties he had scored while others suggested that he only scores against sub-standard opposition.

Sutton has admitted that he is baffled by some of the criticism that the England captain gets.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport (28/03/22): “Harry Kane gets a lot of flak. I just don’t get it.

“I don’t get why he gets so much stick. I know he had a dodgy start to the season because he chucked his toys out of the pram, after the Manchester City thing.

“But, Harry Kane is a top player. I don’t understand the criticism of him.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Most modern-day football fans are not fans of the game at all. They are simply tribal club loyalists, who see it as their duty to pump up their own players and tear down their rivals’.

So, Kane will continue getting hate from fans of other clubs no matter how well he does for England. The reality is that he will never win some of them over as they only want to reaffirm their biases.
