Dimitar Berbatov has called on Spurs fans to temper their expectations despite the good start to the season, insisting that Ange Postecoglou’s men will do better if they are not burdened by too much pressure.

Ahead of the season, not many people gave Tottenham a chance of finishing in the top six, let alone the top four.

In fact, following Harry Kane’s departure, some even suggested that the Lilywhites would struggle to finish in the top half of the table (Sky Sports).

However, Spurs have made an extremely promising start to the campaign, currently sitting unbeaten after four games, with ten points on the board, having found the back of the net 11 times.

That has perhaps got some supporters hoping that Tottenham could surprise a few people and compete with the big guns this season.

However, Berbatov has pointed out that the North London club have made impressive starts to the season before, only to then fall off a cliff.

Berbatov calls for calm around Tottenham Hotspur

The Bulgarian told the US Sun (as relayed by Daily Record): “We had this start before when Tottenham was in and around first place and all of a sudden a drop in form. So I sincerely hope that’s not going to be the case this year.

“If we leave Spurs out of the spotlight a bit and not put too much expectation on them, I think they’ll perform better. Just leave them be and they will play better.

“With a new coach who is flowing and playing attacking football – the fans were singing the other day ‘We have our Tottenham back’ – which is great to hear. You want to have entertaining football, but still get the points.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham fans must remember the fact that we essentially looked at this campaign as a free hit for Postecoglou and only wanted to see some signs of progress on the pitch.

It would now be unfair to burden the Australian with the pressure of a top-four assault and make him a victim of his own early success.
