‘Keep an eye’ – Alasdair Gold names interesting detail he noticed from Postecoglou’s training sessions

Alasdair Gold has explained that there has been plenty of emphasis on low crossing in the training drills performed by Tottenham during pre-season.

In sharp contrast to the counter-attacking approach that Spurs have employed over the last few years, the side are expected to play much more on the front foot under Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian’s sides are known for their incessant pressing off the ball as well as their possession-based and high-intensity approach.

We have already seen plenty of evidence in the club’s two pre-season friendlies that the football is going to be much more daring and easy on the eye than it has been over the past few years.

Spurs are prioritising low crosses into the box

Another noticeable aspect of the friendlies against West Ham United and Lion City Sailors was the number of low crosses that came into the box, and Gold has now explained that this is something there has been a lot of emphasis on in training as well.

The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “Other thing that I noticed and I noticed this in a lot of the training sessions as well. There was a real focus, and I saw this carry into the games, of low crosses.

“It’s quite ironic that Harry Kane scored the most headed goals in a season last season because, in training sessions, they do these bits where the attacker’s attack, attack, attack and attack, then when they get to a certain point, the defence that they are playing against stops.

“It’s like an 11 v 11 walkthrough almost. The defence stops, and the winger or fullback has to then get to the byline, cut the ball back and then someone in the middle has to smash the ball into the back of the net.

“It’s not curled into the box high, it’s not any kind of high crosses. There is the occasional high cross in a match – keep an eye out, for this emphasis on low crossing.”

During the two friendly games, there were also quite a few bodies inside the box when the full-back or the wide-forward got into a crossing position. The two number eights have evidently been instructed to get into the box every time the ball goes out wide.
