Former Sunderland striker, Kevin Phillips admits that he has been left shocked by Troy Parrott’s struggles at Millwall amidst reports that Tottenham are ready to recall the striker in January.

Parrott was sidelined with injuries for the first two months of the season which not only meant that he did not have a proper pre-season with his new club but also put him out of action until late November.

The 18-year-old has been playing catch up since then and is yet to find the back of the net for the Lions in his eight league appearances.

After he was left on the bench for Millwall’s last two matches, reports indicated that Spurs had decided to cut the loan deal short and recall Parrott to the club next month.

Reacting to the update, Phillips told Football Insider: “I’m shocked that it hasn’t worked out for him at Millwall.

“I was excited to see him go out on loan and work under a manager that I obviously know very well.

“It just has not worked out. Whether it is the style of play that Gaz (Millwall manager Gary Rowett) is playing down or whether he is not gelling with the players, I do not know.”

However, the pundit acknowledged that it might be best for all parties if Parrott returns to Spurs on the back of his recent struggles at the Den.

He added: “He has not played a lot of football so it is probably best for all parties for him to go back to Tottenham.

“Then he can train with better players day in, day out and at the end of the season look to go out on loan again.

“I am surprised because everyone had high hopes for him. Everyone was talking about him last year but he has not taken his chance.”

Parrott looks like he needs a fresh start. I would not be surprised if he is recalled by Spurs and loaned out to another club in January.
