Kieran Trippier explains what he told Matt Doherty about Tottenham exit

In a recent appearance on Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE podcast on YouTube, Kieran Trippier has revealed what he said to Matt Doherty about Atletico Madrid after the player was released by Tottenham Hotspur.

In a bizarre twist on January transfer deadline day, Doherty had his contract with Spurs terminated by mutual consent so that he could join Atletico Madrid.

The move came after an initial attempt at loaning Doherty to the Spanish side, before Spurs realised they had already arranged too many overseas loan deals (Sky Sports).

Doherty had been with Tottenham since 2020 and racked up 71 appearances for the North London side (Transfermarkt).

The arrival of Pedro Porro to Spurs, however, left Antonio Conte’s squad with a surplus of right-backs and Doherty was one of the players to make way.

He follows in the footsteps of former Spurs star Kieran Trippier, who also joined Atletico Madrid back in 2019. Trippier would make 86 appearances for the La Liga side (Transfermarkt) and even won the league during his time there.

It was revealed that Trippier had spoken to Doherty regarding the move previously (Irish Examiner), and now we know exactly what the Newcastle player said.

“I spoke to Doherty as well. About how much he’ll enjoy his defending and the whole city and stuff, to give him an insight and help him,” Trippier explained.

“That’s important that he has got someone to lean on, it’s not easy going abroad and going out of your comfort zone but it was an unbelievable experience and something I’ll look back on forever,” he added.

Kieran Trippier always comes across really well whenever I see him do interviews and it sounds like he was a big help for Doherty in navigating this move. It’s great really, because he never had to do that for Doherty, but it says a lot about his character that he did.
