Korean FA release statement on Son Heung-min’s injury

The Korean Football Association (KFA) have revealed that they will make a decision on Son Heung-min’s participation in the World Cup after the Tottenham striker undergoes surgery.

Son had to leave the field of play and was replaced by Yves Bissouma just before the half-hour mark against Marseille after he was on the receiving end of a nasty head collision with former Newcastle player Chancel Mbemba.

Spurs confirmed late yesterday evening that the forward has sustained a fracture around his left eye socket and will now go under the knife.

The timing of the injury is far from ideal for Son, with the World Cup just around the corner and South Korea’s hopes resting on the shoulders of their captain and talisman.

The Daily Mail claimed yesterday that sources had not ruled out the prospect of the Spurs star being fitted with a protective mask and playing a part in Tottenham’s Premier League match against Leeds United on November 12, which will be the club’s final game before the break for the World Cup.

The KFA have now confirmed that they will make a decision on Son’s selection after he undergoes surgery and added that they are in contact with Tottenham throughout the process.

Their statement read (via Sungmo Lee): “We will decide whether he could participate in the World Cup or not after the outcome of his surgery. We keep cooperating with Tottenham medical team on Son’s injury.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The timing of the injury is extremely unfortunate for Son as it would have meant a lot for the forward to lead his country in the World Cup.

Even if the 30-year-old does not recover in time and potentially misses the first couple of games in Qatar, I still expect South Korea to name him in their squad, given his importance to the side and his influence in the dressing room.
