Kulusevski reflects on start to life at Spurs, his new teammates and proving people wrong

Dejan Kulusevski says he is pleased with how his Tottenham career has started and feels his positive displays have come as a result of wanting to prove his doubters wrong.

Spurs signed Kulusevski on loan for £8.3 million in from Juventus in January and have the option to buy him for around £25 million this summer (The Guardian).

The 21-year-old Swede has made a quick impression during his early stages at Spurs recording nine goal contributions in 12 Premier League games (Transfermarkt), to elevate his side into contention for a Champions League place.

Kulusevski’s move to Tottenham came following a frustrating stint with Juventus where he was used inconsistently in a host of different roles by manager Massimiliano Allegri

However, he believes his promising spell of recent form, having hit the ground running in a new league and country, has been driven by his desire to prove people wrong.

He said in Tottenham’s matchday programme (via Football.London): “I think that I wanted to show everybody what l could do. I think I maybe became even more motivated. I love proving people wrong, so I was very hungry when I came here.

“But, still, I knew it would be very, very difficult to arrive in a new league and everything that comes with that. A lot of things had to click, and honestly, everything has clicked so well.

“With the coaches, they found the perfect position for me, so l can have the ball a lot, attack the goal and have opportunities to score goals and assist my teammates.

“I think you can see, when I play, I play freely, without really thinking, without worrying about mistakes, I just play my game. That is when I play at my best. I am happy when I can do that.”

Kulusevski also attributed part of his confidence to the help of his Spurs teammates, who welcomed him into the dressing room with open arms.

He added: “And my teammates have been amazing. From the first day, I got a really warm welcome and, on the pitch, we have fun together – that’s very good.

“I also knew some of them from before. The most important thing is that we have fun away from the pitch, and we are like a family, and then, on the pitch, everything is easier.

“There is a really positive feeling here right now. I don’t think I’ve ever been a part of something like this before – a team winning so much and, so far, finding it so easy to score.

“But we have to remain humble and keep playing as we are because we are all enjoying it, the players, the coaches, the staff and the fans.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Kulusevski has been brimming with confidence since his arrival at the club and it is impressive how he has managed to settle into his new surroundings this quickly.

Hopefully he is able to continue that with a number of crucial games coming up, as he has emerged into an underrated option in the Spurs front line.
