La Liga club manager admits he tried to sign Tottenham player in the past

Sevilla coach Jorge Sampaoli has expressed his admiration for Bryan Gil and admitted that he tried to sign the winger when he was at Marseille.

Gil arrived at Tottenham from Sevilla as a very highly-rated young talent in 2021 but despite showing some glimpses of his quality, the winger has not made the impact he was hoping for at the Premier League club.

The 21-year-old has not made a single start for Spurs this season (Transfermarkt), and unsurprisingly, reports over recent months indicated that Antonio Conte’s men are willing to loan him out in January (Evening Standard).

Valencia have been credited with an interest in re-signing Gil on loan on the back of his spell at the Mestalla last season, with AS (01/12/22 relayed by Sport Witness) claiming at the start of this month that Gennaro Gattuso is keen on bringing the Tottenham man back to the club.

Over recent days, Sevilla have also been mooted as a potential destination for Gil, Mucho Deporte claiming on Monday that the Andalusian outfit have explored a move for the Spain international, even though he is not viewed by the club as a priority signing.

Sampaoli, who was in charge of Sevilla when Gil was coming through the club’s youth ranks, has now spoken in glowing terms about the Spurs star.

The 62-year-old said (Twitch via Sevilla): “We always assess young people, we always train with a group during sessions. In 2017, Bryan Gil was with us. He was 14 or 15 years old. We took the best players to train with us during first-team training.

“They were the best, regardless of their age. Bryan arrived that day and he was very young. He ended up being exceptional. I remembered him when I wanted to take him to Marseille.”

Tottenham will want to talk to clubs interested in Gil and ask for guarantees about regular game time for the winger. Even if Conte does not see the 21-year-old as part of his plans, it will be in the North London club’s best interest for Gil to play regularly so that his value goes up ahead of the summer transfer window.
