As Rodrigo Bentancur man edges close to the final year of his Tottenham contract, a La Liga giant has now made contact to ask about the possibility of a summer deal.

Tottenham Hotspur’s main issue in midfield this season has been that their two senior stars, Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma, have not performed as well as expected.

Bissouma is expected to leave Spurs this summer on the back of a poor season, but the Uruguayan, who has been plagued by inconsistently, is expected to remain at the club.

Plenty of reports over recent weeks have claimed that Tottenham have opened contract talks with Bentancur, with the midfielder’s current deal running out in 2026.

However, it has now been revealed that the former Juventus man has emerged as a target for a top Champions League club, who are keeping an eye on his contract situation.

This update comes from Relevo, who say that Atletico Madrid want to strengthen in midfield this summer and have set their sights on Bentancur.

What Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has said about Bentancur

Even though Bentancur has struggled to recapture the form he showed before his ACL injury two years ago, the Tottenham head coach has thrown his support behind the midfielder.

Ange Postecoglou made it clear that Bentancur is part of his Spurs plans, but the Australian refused to give anything away about a potential new contract for the 27-year-old.

Postecoglou said last month about Bentancur: “Rodri has been great. In terms of his contract situation, that’s handled by others and a lot of our strategizing is about long term. Rodri through the latter period has been getting back to levels he wants.

“He’s come off a long-term injury and then came back and got another injury and then a false start with a long suspension. He just needs regular game time. He’s a good guy, experienced and will be important in the run-in.”
