Erik Lamela has spoken about his impressive start to the new campaign and has explained the reasons why he has made fans sit up and take notice.
The 26-year-old joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2013 from AS Roma for a fee said to be worth an initial £25.8 million, which was a substantial amount back then.
Lamela has had his fair share of injuries since he made the switch to White Hart Lane and has missed well over a year combined with different problems ranging from a long-term hip issue to muscular strains.
He has also struggled with personal problems during the past couple of years. The attacker returned to his native Argentina for a short period in December 2016 while his brother was ill. His dog, Simba, has also passed away.
However, Lamela believes that the fact he was fit and able to participate in Tottenham’s pre-season has allowed him to hit the ground running.
His high work rate which sees him tirelessly pressing from the top of the pitch coupled with the fact he has scored four goals in his last six games has left some Spurs fans hoping that we are now about to finally reap the rewards of such a talented player.
He told the official Spurs site: “I’m happy because I’m feeling good and I’m featuring in lots of games,
“I’m happy to be playing and I’m enjoying it.
“The difference is that I started this season at the start of the summer while last year at this stage I was still recovering from my hip surgery.
“I started last season in November (he returned at Leicester on 28 November). At the beginning I was still having few problems, which is normal when you come back from surgery, but now I feel more comfortable.
“It’s always tough when you miss the pre-season but I also felt good last season. This season I’ve started from the beginning and that’s the difference.”
