Lampard reveals that he is hopeful key man will return from injury for Spurs clash

Frank Lampard has admitted that Chelsea are hopeful that Christian Pulisic could be fit to take to the field for the all-important London derby against Tottenham next weekend.

Both sides have ensured that they remain in the conversation regarding the title race after their impressive starts to the campaign.

Tottenham go into the clash at Stamford Bridge as the table-toppers but a win for the Blues could see them leapfrog their rivals with only two points separating the sides.

Both Spurs and Chelsea have improved at the back over recent weeks but Jose Mourinho’s men could be without Toby Alderweireld for the derby on Sunday after the Belgian came off in the latter stages of the 2-0 win over Manchester City with a groin problem.

Losing Alderweireld for what will arguably be Tottenham’s toughest away trip of the season so far is certainly a major blow for the Lilywhites and it could be further compounded by the news that Chelsea could have one of their most threatening attackers back fit.

Lampard confirmed that Pulisic, who has not featured since coming on as a late substitute against Krasnodar last month, has not travelled to France to face Rennes this evening but could be fit for this weekend’s clash.

The Chelsea boss said (via Goal.com): “Christian stays back and doesn’t travel but the good news is that he has had aggression in the last week.

“The reason he has stayed back is to get some physical work in so hopefully that will have him ready for selection come the weekend and onwards.”
