‘Laughable’ – Pundit at a loss to explain Mourinho’s recent comments

Alan Hutton has admitted that he was puzzled by Jose Mourinho’s comments regarding Toby Alderweireld after Tottenham’s 2-2 draw against Newcastle United on Sunday.

When asked to explain Alderweireld’s absence from the matchday squad at St James’ Park, Mourinho said after the match that the Belgian did not return from international duty in time to take the COVID-tests and only reported for training on Saturday, a day before Tottenham’s trip to Newcastle.

However, videos of the training session released by the club show that the centre-back did train with his Spurs teammates on Friday and Mourinho’s remarks are said to have caused confusion at Spurs.

It has been claimed that Alderweireld feels the Tottenham boss lashed out at him for no reason and is seeking to leave the club in the summer.

Hutton admitted that he is at a loss to explain the Tottenham boss’ comments and that he finds the situation to be laughable.

The former Spurs defender told Football Insider: “It makes zero sense to me.

“I don’t understand it one bit. Mourinho actually came out and said he was late from international duty.

“But then he turned up on Thursday morning, when he was supposed to, and trained.

“However, then Mourinho says he hasn’t trained since Saturday and then the pictures and video come out. I mean what are you talking about?

“Is there something going on behind the scenes? Is there something we are missing? I don’t know. That made no sense to say that a player has turned up late and he’s not trained.

“You can physically see him on Instagram or Twitter training so no wonder we’re laughing. That’s what it is, it’s laughable.”
