Ledley King’s message to Shane Long after breaking his 19-year Premier League record

Ledley King has taken to Twitter to congratulate Shane Long after the striker broke his Premier League record.

Long was named in Southampton’s starting eleven for last night’s Premier League match against Watford at Vicarage Road and scored the fastest goal in the competition’s history when he netted after 7.69 seconds.

The striker’s goal came straight after Watford defender Craig Cathcart received the ball from the kick off and his clearance was blocked by Long, who drove towards goal and lifted the ball over Ben Foster into the back of the net in what was just the sixth touch of the ball during the game.

The goal broke a 19-year record which was held by Spurs legend Ledley King who scored after 9.82 seconds against Braford City in the 2000/01 season. King was operating in a midfield role under the management of George Graham at the time.

King was his usual classy self when he paid tribute to the Republic of Ireland international.
