‘Less faith’ – Journalist labels Tottenham’s signing of 23-year-old as ‘strange’

Journalist Dean Jones has revealed that he found Tottenham’s signing of Emerson Royal to be a ‘strange’ move last summer and admitted he does not expect the Brazilian to turn his Spurs career around.

Emerson did not have the worst of starts to his time in North London after arriving from Barcelona in the summer for a fee of worth £31.1m including add-ons (The Athletic).

However, the 23-year-old has not managed to adapt sufficiently to the right wing-back role in Antonio Conte’s system since the Italian look over three and a half months ago.

The Brazilian international was dropped by Conte in favour of Matt Doherty for Tottenham’s clash against Wolves on Sunday.

Emerson has certainly had his fair share of critics over recent months, with some pundits questioning whether he offers enough going forward (Sky Sports News – 1:20 pm, February 12, 2021).

Jones believes that the former Real Betis man’s time at Tottenham could be short-lived.

The journalist told GiveMeSport regarding Emerson: “I’ve got probably less faith in Emmerson long-term being part of things at Spurs.

“I think it’s a strange one that they brought him in in the first place, there wasn’t any clear sign that he would be a success at the club.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham’s acquisition of Emerson made sense to me in the summer and I still think that he is very competent playing as a right-back in a back four. However, he clearly does not fit the bill for Conte’s system, which is why I would not be surprised if Spurs let the 23-year-old go at the end of the season.
