Lessons learned for Alli and team-mates

Dele Alli believes last season’s very poor Champions League campaign has actually played a part in this season’s superb performances including the 3-1 demolition of Real Madrid on Wednesday evening.

The Milton Keynes born midfielder scored two goals against the reigning European champions but Wednesday night’s result was the polar opposite of what was witnessed in last seasons competition.

We exited rather limply at the group stage as we struggled to make Wembley home, however Alli believes that the harsh lesson of last year has proved invaluable to the Spurs team of 2017 as we have so far impressed in this year’s competition.

“It’s a massive confidence boost for us,” the two goal hero star told talkSPORT.

“Obviously it was a disappointing campaign for us last year but we had a lot to learn. It was a lot of our first time in the Champions League and it was important that we learnt this season and I think we showed that we have.

He added “We’re just looking forward to the next game and now we’ll make sure we win that.”

Alli was making his debut in this year’s Champions League after returning from suspension and following the victory over Real Madrid the midfielder was keen to praise his manager for showing faith in him.

Alli said: “I’m very thankful for the trust he puts into me, there was a lot of very good performances by the boys when I was suspended but I’m thankful that he gave me a chance and put me in the starting XI tonight.

Alli concluded:“I’m happy to get the two goals but more importantly it was a good performance by everyone.”

It’s been a stuttering start to the season for the young man but the Alli we are used to has re emerged in the last few weeks and he was sensational last night. He showed added maturity last night but also in the defeat at Old Trafford when Ashley Young spent the entire game on a wind up mission. When he’s on his game like that he’s unplayable and he will get better.
