Ange Postecoglou has insisted that it is not his role to temper the expectations of Tottenham fans, remarking that they can get excited about what the season has in store.
It is fair to say that expectations at Spurs coming into this season were as low as they have been for over a decade on the back of the tumultuous end to last season.
With Harry Kane leaving the club this summer and the Lilywhites going in a new direction under the new coaching staff, many supporters expected this to be a transitional campaign.
However, Tottenham have started the season with a bang, with 13 points from their first five league games, which is the best start that the club have had to a season since 1965 (Evening Standard).
The manner in which the Lilywhites came from behind to turn the result around against Sheffield United has understandably got some Spurs fans dreaming that something special could be in store this season.
Postecoglou will not rain on the Spurs fan parade
When Postecoglou was asked after the 2-1 win if fans need to temper their expectations, he told Spurs Play: “No, no, no, let them go, let them go and enjoy it. My role is not to burst people’s bubbles. Let them get excited, let them get ahead of themselves.
“That’s the beauty of being a supporter. They go through enough pain mate, you want to let them enjoy it. If they think we’re going to be world beaters then great, that’s up to us to match that expectation. Our supporters deserve to have some happiness and enjoy it any way they want to.”
Spurs Web Opinion
This is such a refreshing answer and demonstrates that Ange is supremely confident in himself.
Some of the managers we have had recently (particularly Conte) have always tended to play down expectations and talk up how much better the squads of our rivals are, purely for self-serving reasons.
So, it is music to my ears to hear a Tottenham head coach be self-assured enough to ask fans to get excited, even if it increases the expectations of him and the team.
