The back pages and gossip columns were rife with speculation over the future of Toby Alderweireld this summer, as he was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United.

The 29-year-old has been a rock at the back with his partner Jan Vertonghen for many seasons now, which has undoubtedly caught the eye of some rival managers.

Reports suggested that Alderweireld wanted to leave the club, and was willing to let his contract run down, which entered its final year this season.

There is however a clause in his current deal that allows Tottenham to extend his stay for an extra year, but it will allow the Belgian to be sold for £25m during one week of next summer’s transfer window.

It seems unlikely that no one will come in for the world class defender’s signature, with a buy out clause of just £25m, so this could well be Toby’s final season in a Lilywhite jersey.

Your mind tends to drift back to other want-away stars who forced through moves to bigger clubs, Dimitar Berbatov, Luka Modric, and Gareth Bale to name a few, however, early indications imply that Alderweireld is happy to keep his head down and his mouth shut until the end of his contract.

It’s refreshing to see a player so successfully ignore speculation and carry on with his job with relative ease, as Toby showed with an excellent display against Manchester United on Monday night.

Not only this, but his Twitter shows his hunger to win a big trophy during what could be his last season at the club.

Let’s take a look through some of his best recent tweets.

Worst case scenario: Tottenham seem to have one of the best defender’s in the world for one more season

Best case scenario: Spurs’ success this season convinces Alderweireld to sign a new long-term deal
