‘The gaffer has told me’ – Reguilon reveals Conte’s individual instructions for him

Sergio Reguilon has revealed that Antonio Conte has been using video footage from his Chelsea and Inter Milan sides to guide the Tottenham squad during his first few training sessions at the club.

The Italian has been thrust into a position of intense work and limited preparation time at Spurs after being appointed as the club’s new manager last Tuesday.

He immediately switched the side’s formation into his preferred three in defence for his first game against Vitesse Arnhem on Thursday and guided the side to an entertaining 3-2 win.

Conte stuck with the same line-up for Sunday’s clash against Everton, but only saw his side come away with a point in a stalemate at Goodison Park.

Despite only being at the club for such a short period of time, Conte’s intense training sessions are already being felt by members of the Spurs squad, with many looking leggy towards the end of the encounter against the Toffees.

Spurs left-back Reguilon, who is having to adapt into a new wing-back role, says the Italian has told him he needs to be both solid at the back and effective in the final third.

He said (via Evening Standard): “The gaffer is special. He loves training hard but now we don’t have a lot of time to work on the things he wants on the pitch. So we did a lot of meetings with videos this week.

“I’ve never played five at the back before. I have to learn quickly.

“The gaffer has told me he wants me to be solid in defence but at the same moment, I have to arrive in the box, help the strikers, score goals, give assists. Now I have more of a chance to score goals and give assists. So let’s work.

“I have to see many videos with the staff to do what they want on the pitch. I’m enjoying the position a lot because I can attack more but I have to run double.”

Spurs Web Opinion

From the opening couple of games, you can see that Reguilon is due to have a big part in Conte’s system up and down the wing.

Conte has had a lot of success developing full-backs into solid wing-backs, and with a bit of time, we will hopefully see that with Reguilon and Emerson Royal on the opposite flank.
