Ligue 1 club’s president compares rumoured Spurs target with Mbappe

Rennes president Nicolas Holveck believes that rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target Eduardo Camavinga has the potential to be as good as Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe.

Camavinga has had an impressive campaign in the heart of Rennes’ midfield and has been tipped for big things in the future (Goal).

The 17-year-old has displayed maturity beyond his years this season and has featured primarily in a midfield pivot role, helping to protect the back four.

It was reported in March that the teenager’s performances had caught the attention of both Liverpool and Spurs (Sport), while Real Madrid are also said to be showing interest in the Frenchman (Marca).

The youngster is reportedly valued at around £43million by Rennes (Football.London).

Holveck has previously admitted his determination to keep Camavinga at Roazhon Park (RTL via Goal). However, Rennes president has now reiterated his desire and raved about the midfielder’s talent.

He told Foot Mercato: “Given the economic context, I’m not sure that there will be a lot of major signings.

“We want him to stay with us next season, that’s our ambition.

“Eduardo is very close to (coach) Julien (Stephan) and his staff. He is still very young, he is a very thoughtful boy, with incredible maturity.

“He reminds me of a young man I had the chance to know in Monaco,” he added referring to Mbappe, who helped guide Monaco to the Ligue 1 title in the 2016/17 season before moving to Paris.

Spurs Web Opinion

There have been multiple reports suggesting that we are likely to look towards the Ligue 1 this summer in order to complete some bargain deals. I would not be surprised if Camavinga is one of the prospects we are looking at.

Given the financial distress clubs in the French top-flight are currently in, I would expect Rennes to cash in on the teenager irrespective of what Nicolas Holveck says publicly. However, I doubt we could afford the rumoured £43m asking price.
