Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez have both labelled Cristian Romero as the best centre-back in the world after the Tottenham man delivered a battling display to help Argentina emerge victorious over Ecuador.
Romero has started the season with Spurs in exemplary form, with his partnership with Micky van de Ven having all the makings of an extremely solid one for the Lilywhites.
The 25-year-old’s impressive start to the season has even seen him being named in Whoscored’s best eleven for August from Europe’s top-five leagues.

The Tottenham man has taken his club form into international football, playing a starring role as the Albiceleste overcame Ecuador 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Buenos Aires on Thursday.
Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni was blown away by Romero’s showing, remarking that the centre-back played an ‘incredible game’ (D-Sports).
Messi, who netted the match-winner for the World Champions on 78th-minute with a perfectly-placed free-kick, labelled the Spurs star’s performance as ‘amazing’.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner told Telemundo: “For me, he [Cuti Romero] is the best defender in the world right now. Amazing performance tonight, man of the match.”
Midfielder Enzo Fernandez also agreed with Messi’s assertion, with the Chelsea star commenting the following on Romero’s Instagram post: “The best central in the world.”

The most exciting thing about Romero is that at 25 years of age, he is nowhere near the peak of his powers just yet. There is no doubt that the Tottenham man has the potential to develop into one of the best centre-backs in the world if he is not there already.
