Tottenham Hotspur are weighing up whether to sign a talented Premier League right-back, but there are five other clubs in a similar situation.

There are going to be some new additions at Tottenham Hotspur this summer, after what has been another cruel campaign.

Spurs have once again dealt with a soaring injury list, emphasising the importance of having strong squad depth.

The defensive positions will be a particular area of concern, with only three teams conceding more goals in the Premier League this season.

It is therefore unsurprising to see Tottenham linked with a right-back who can play as a centre-back, and in defensive midfield as well.

Tottenham are exploring a deal for Lutsharel Geertruida

According to Team Talk, Spurs are keeping tabs on Lutsharel Geertruida, who is currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig.

The 25-year-old has made 25 Premier League appearances this season, and he recently started in Sunderland’s 2-1 victory over Newcastle.

However, Liverpool scouted Geertruida in January and are ‘very much interested’ in making a deal with the Bundesliga club this summer.

Aston Villa, Everton and Crystal Palace are also considering him as an option, while Sunderland could make his move permanent for £20m.

Spurs only have two cards to play in order to sign Geertruida

There are two tactics Tottenham can use to convince Geertuida to make North London his new home and the first is by guaranteeing him starts.

Even though the Dutchman has done well at Sunderland, many of his appearances have been from off the bench. Liverpool have had a right-back shortage at times this season, but could they really ensure Geertuida frequently starts?

The other is to rely on the persuasion of Xavi Simons and Micky van de Ven, as the idea of partnering with his fellow countrymen could be appealing for the defender.

However, with van de Ven’s future up in the air, this strategy might work better as a last-ditch attempt if the first method fails.
