‘Liverpool has to just be the start’ – Conte on what he wants from Dele Alli

Antonio Conte has insisted that Liverpool has to be the start of something rather than a one-off for Dele Alli at Tottenham Hotspur.

With the Italian having restricted numbers due to a COVID-19 outbreak against Jurgen Klopp’s side at the weekend, Dele was handed a rare Premier League start.

However, the former England international took the game by the scruff of the neck and showcased somewhat of a throwback to his peak Tottenham years.

The only thing missing from Dele’s superb all-round performance was a goal or assist, as he spurned a couple of opportunities to secure the win for Spurs.

Conte revealed that he hopes Alli can continue his form across the upcoming weeks and months, insisting the Liverpool performance must be a starting point.

Tottenham play West Ham United in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals tomorrow night, potentially giving Dele a chance to follow up on his performance.

Conte said (Charlie Eccleshare): “He has to keep showing the desire to stay here and continue to want to stay here and to deserve to stay here. Liverpool has to just be the start because you can play one game but I need to see continuity of performance. I’ll be the first to be happy if that happens.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Of course, Conte is correct here. Over the past few years, we have seen multiple new manager bounces for Dele. He was class when Mourinho first came in and again at the start of the season under Nuno. This time, he needs to maintain his standards.
